PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spacer for flat panel display having linear expansion coefficient corresponding with or approximating to that of glass, strength, and predetermined conductivity. SOLUTION: The spacer for flat panel display 103 is composed of a sintered body which contains MgAl<SB>2</SB>O<SB>4</SB>or preferably does as a main phase. It is desirable for the sintered body to contain MgO in addition, and if it contains MgAl<SB>2</SB>O<SB>4</SB>and MgO, it is preferred that the peak intensity of MgO (200) plane in an X-ray diffraction pattern is in the range from 0.5 to 50, provided that the peak intensity of MgAl<SB>2</SB>O<SB>4</SB>(311) plane is 100. This spacer 103 is put between a back plate 201 equipped with a negative pole structure 202 and a face plate 101 placed at a predetermined distance from the back plate 201 and equipped with a fluorescent pixel region 105 to keep the distance.
