[Also in Group XXX] Relates to apparatus for mixing solids, liquids, powders and plastic materials with, if desired, simultaneous grinding, crushing, extruding etc.; also gases. Fig. 1 shows a batch mixer comprising an inner component 1 with a helical thread 12, and an outer component 2 with a thread 13, the screw grooves of the two components varying in cross-section in an opposite and complementary manner; the hands of the threads and the direction of rotation are selected so that the two threads convey in opposite senses. The circular or annular cover may comprise six pivoted segments opening out into an annular ring which forms a discharge channel. Fig. 2 shows an extrusion mixer in which the outer component 2 has a thread 13 of the same hand throughout. Material enters through the funnel 6 and the section 5 of the inner component has a conveying action only. In sections 7 and 8B the thread 12 conveys in the same direction as that of the outer component and the thread grooves vary in complementary fashion so that mixing and conveying take place. In section 8A the hand of the inner thread 12A is reversed to provide additionally intensive mixing, as in the construction of Fig. 1. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) the section 7 is also divided into two parts 7A, 7B of which 7B has a reversed outer thread and 7B, 8B have a restricted flow cross-section. The apparatus of Fig. 4 has two grinding and mixing sections 25, 26 for a first material section 26 being surrounded by a similar section 27 for a second material, the prepared materials being fed into a mixing section 28 similar to the apparatus of Fig. 3. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown) the two milling sections 31, 32 feed into a central pre-mixing chamber 34 and thence to the mixing section 33 which is coaxial with, and enclosed by, the section 32. The clearance between the components may be adjusted by moving them axially, and passages for a heat exchange medium may be provided.The helical threads may be polished or left as cast, and may have holes or interruptions.
