摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel cell which can be stably operated for a long period of time, since a pressurizing force applied to a membrane electrode assembly of a unit cell is almost uniformly held, and the breakage of an electrolyte membrane caused by a stress concentration is avoided. <P>SOLUTION: In this polymer electrolyte type fuel cell in which the outer surface of the membrane electrode assembly comprising the electrolyte membrane 1 held between protective sheets 4, a diffusion layer 3A, and a catalyst layer 2A is composed of a first plane T2 disposed face to face with a region where the catalyst layer 2A is formed, a second plane T2 lower than the first plane T1, a separator 6A to sandwich the membrane electrode assembly is structured so as to have a third plane S1 making contact with the first plane T1 face to face, and a fourth plane S2 making contact with the second plane T2 face to face while being higher than the third plane S1 in its inner surface.
