PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light control element which is applicable to a display element, a color filter, a microsensor, a light control member etc., capable of displaying characters, a design, an illustration, etc., and having high design properties by providing the light control element with a light control region containing stimulus-responsive high polymer gel and a non-light control region, and which can distinctively turn ON/OFF visibility in a display state and a non-display state. SOLUTION: The light control element has: the light control region where a shape retaining member retaining shapes of the stimulus-responsive high polymer gel and liquid interacting with the stimulus-responsive high polymer gel; and the non-light control region, wherein the light control region in a non-display state and the non-light control region are in the same color.
