PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To greatly reduce surface defects caused by defective alignment in the manufacturing of an optical film, especially in the manufacturing of an optical compensating film. SOLUTION: In the manufacturing method of the optical film, a belt shaped and flexible support body 16 is continuously run, a rubbing process is conducted for the surface of the support body by a rubbing device 70, and coating liquid is applied onto the surface of the support body by a coating means 11, after the rubbing process so as to form a functional film. A support body temperature adjusting means is arranged in the upper stream side of the rubbing device for controlling the moisture content of the support body, and the rubbing device is covered by a rubbing moisture adjusting means to control atmospheric humidity of the surrounding of the rubbing device.
