Apparatus (1) for monitoring channel performance in Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexed (DWDM) optical networks (2) receives an optical signal from the DWDM optical network (2). A tunable channel selection optical filter (3) is coupled to receive the optical signal from the optical network (2) to isolate and transmit a single channel from the network. A tunable optical notch filter (4) receives the isolated channel and scans it at a narrow bandwidth. By tuning the tunable optical notch filter (4) to a region outside the isolated channel, the whole channel will be transmitted through the tunable optical notch filter (4) to be processed by a channel transmission analysis system (8). The scanned narrowband signal from the tunable optical notch filter (4) can be output to be processed by an optical spectrum analyzer (9). Tuning of the filters (3 and 4) is controlled by a control system (7).
