PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a navigation device for vehicles and a map data updating system equipped with the same, which can effectively update only necessary map change data, while suppressing communication costs required to obtain new map data. SOLUTION: The system comprises; a VICS station which transmits event information relating to changed or newly constructed roads; a map management center; and a navigation device. The map management center sends back event information relating to changes or new constructions in all roads linked to a searching route, and distributes map mesh data. The navigation device receives the event information transmitted from the VICS station and stores it. In the case the event information exists, the searching route is transmitted to the map management center. Then the route is searched again while adding the event information relating to the searching route which is sent back from the map management center.
