PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating water capable of stably operating efficiently and for a long time by carrying out membrane separation of liquid to be treated and efficiently settling to separate a suspended substance in the liquid to be treated simultaneously in immersion type separation membrane means, thereby reducing the load of the suspended substance to a separation membrane module. SOLUTION: The method for treating water that obtains membrane-filtered water using the separation membrane module immersed and placed in a immersion tank storing the liquid to be treated comprises a filtration process in which at least an operation process absorbs the liquid to be treated through the separation membrane module to obtain the membrane-filtered water; an air cleaning process for cleaning the surface of the separation membrane module by supplying air from a diffused aeration device placed beneath the separation membrane module; and a sludge discharge process for discharging sludge settled and deposited on the bottom part of the immersion tank outside the immersion tank wherein after the filtration process (1) is separately carried out for a predetermined time, the sludge discharge process (2) is separately carried out or the the filtration process and the sludge discharge process are simultaneously carried out, and next, the air cleaning process (3) is carried out in this order at least one time or more.
