The present invention relates to a data compressor (10) with value range detection, comprising: a decision unit (14) receiving a digital signal (12) and adapted for deciding whether a value of the digital signal (12) lies in at least one value range and generating an output signal (16) indicating whether the value lies in the at least one value range or not, and a processing unit (20) receiving the digital signal (12) and adapted for processing values of the digital signal (12) in that it increments a counter (15) as long as the output signal (16) indicates that the values lie in the at least one value range, and that it determines an approximated value of the values, outputs the approximated value together with the count of the counter (15), and resets the counter (15), if the output signal (16) indicates that a value does not lie in the at least one value range. |
