The device has a control unit for controlling an energizing current to be supplied to a generator propelled by an internal combustion engine. A detector circuit (101) detects the starting of the engine. A gradual excitation circuit (106) nullifies or enables a command for the gradual excitation cancellation, after the detection of the machine start, based on the initial value of a masking circuit for the excitation cancellation. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling the energy produced by a generator.
