PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical alignment type liquid crystal display apparatus in which luminance and response speed can further be improved. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display apparatus includes a pair of substrates having electrodes and vertical alignment films, a liquid crystal inserted between the pair of the substrates and has a negative anisotropy of dielectric and an alignment control structure arranged for each of the pair of the substrates to control the alignment of the liquid crystal. Each alignment control structure 30 includes a plurality of constituent units and a narrow width unit which is placed between two constituent units among the plurality of the constituent units and has a narrow width than the constituent units.
