PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a water-based urethane resin that has excellent coating film properties and adhesiveness and is suitable for uses of various coatings and adhesion, by which water dispersibility of a urethane prepolymer is improved. SOLUTION: In the method for producing a water-based urethane prepolymer, by which at least an organic polyisocyanate is urethanized with a polyol and a dimethylolalkanoic acid, the obtained isocyanate group-terminated urethane polymer is neutralized, dispersed into water and a chain extension reaction is carried out, in the urethanization reaction, a carboxylic acid having one active hydrogen-containing group except a carboxy group in the molecule is used.
