PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating method and a coater for applying a coating liquid having a viscosity of of≤10 cp in a wet amount of application of≤10 cc/m<SP>2</SP>coating, at increased speed. SOLUTION: A die 14 is formed with a lip provided on the downstream side in a travel direction of a web so as to project more to the web side than the lip provided on an upstream side and is formed with a rugged part consisting of a plurality of ruggedness on a land at the top end of the lip on the upstream side. The depth of the ruggedness of the rugged part is≥5 to≤500μm and the pitch of the ruggedness is 50 to≤500μm.
