The circular saw for cutting firewood has a frame (1) on wh ich a drivable circular saw blade (3) is mounted on a shaft (2). Wood (11b) is advanced towards the saw blade by a forward feed component when the blade is stationary in a wood accommodation channel (5). A protective houisng is provided for the saw blade. The protective housing has a lower part (7) to accommodate a lower area of the saw blade and an upper part (7) to limit a work gap (9) which opens to the forward feed component. This upper part protects an upper area of the saw blade and an upper part (8) to limit a work gap (9) which opens to the forward feed component. This upper part protects an upper area of the saw blade. The upper part can be swivelled upwards opposite to the lower part for making the work gap wider, with movement from a lower stop position to an upper stop position against the force of a return spring.
