A paper mill feeds a fibrous web (1) to a de-watering press and a drying station with a heated drum (2) forming smoothing nip gap with a smoothing drum (5). Throughout its advance from the beginning of the press to the smoothing gap, the web is supported by a dewatering belt (8, 9) or a drum. The drying drum has a ceramic coating and is powered by a drive mechanism (5), and has sag correction for its own weight. In an alternative embodiment the drum (2) coating is a heat-resistant plastic and is coupled to a chilling unit (14). The press gap is an elongated zone.
