<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector which has excellent moving picture display characteristics and uniform in-plane display characteristics, and has the manufacture cost and the power consumption of which are prevented from getting higher. <P>SOLUTION: The projector includes: a liquid crystal device; a projection optical system; an illuminating device for emitting illumination luminous flux having a sectional shape compressed in a y-axis direction and having about one kind of linearly polarized light component; and a rotating prism rotating at fixed speed and scanning the image forming area of the liquid crystal device with illumination luminous flux from the illuminating device in the y-axis direction. The projector further includes: a rotary polarizing plate 702 arranged between the illuminating device and the liquid crystal device, having an axis of polarization in a direction perpendicular to the illumination optical axis of the illuminating device and constituted to freely rotate around the illumination optical axis; and a rotation controller for controlling the rotation of the rotary polarizing plate 702 in accordance with the position of the illumination luminous flux on the image forming area so as to reduce the difference of illuminance caused by changing the scanning speed of the illumination luminous flux on the image forming area in the liquid crystal device. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
