PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document reader and a document reading method capable of appropriately reading a special document having a high reflection factor of light with a simple and inexpensive configuration. SOLUTION: When the special document is read, a prescan is performed in advance, and it is determined whether the amount of exposure to light should be reduced. When it is determined that the amount of exposure to light should be reduced, the amount of exposure to light applied to the document is adjusted for reading the document with an appropriate amount of exposure to light. An S/N ratio is reduced with a decrease in the amount of exposure to light, thus performing correction for compensating the decrease. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
