PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve feelings upon use and a skin-irritating property of an external preparation for skin in which a thickener composed of produced microgel is formulated by carrying out radical polymerization of a water-soluble ethylenic unsaturated monomer in a disperse phase in a composition containing a water phase in which a water-soluble ethylenic unsaturated monomer is dissolved in water as a disperse phase and containing an organic solvent or oil as a disperse medium. SOLUTION: The composition is composed of a thickener composed of microgel obtained by dissolving a water-soluble ethylenic unsaturated monomer into a disperse phase and carrying out radical polymerization of the monomer in the disperse phase and a compound represented by general formula (1): R1O-[(AO)m(EO)n]-R2(wherein AO is a 3-4C oxyalkylene group;EO is an oxyethylene group; m and n satisfy each the formulas: 1≤m≤70 and 1≤n≤70).
