PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform two-dimensional display at higher resolution.

SOLUTION: When a voltage is not applied between upper the electrode 50 and the lower electrode 51 of a liquid lens 42 of a wave front control unit 13, the interface between a nonpolar liquid 54 and a polar liquid 53 is leveled. Because the wave front control unit 13 does not affect incident light, the image is two-dimensionally displayed at high-resolution by the unit of pixel of a two-dimensional image display unit 12. One liquid lens 42 is assigned to the plurality of pixels. In contrast, a three-dimensionally displayed image is displayed at low resolution by the unit of the liquid lens 42. The number is smaller than the number of pixels of the two-dimensional image display unit 12. The device and the method can be applied to a stereoscopic image display device.
