PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing a hot rolled steel sheet for hot dip galvanizing where production of scale flaws can be suppressed without damaging its workability and hot dip galvanizing properties. SOLUTION: In the method of producing a hot rolled steel sheet for hot dip galvanizing, in a method where a steel slab having an Si content of≤0.040 mass% is hot-rolled so as to be a steel sheet, and the steel sheet is thereafter cooled by a runner table, and is coiled so as to produce a hot rolled steel sheet, in the case the temperature of cooling water used for the above cooling is≥36°C, a steel slab having an Si content of 0.020 to 0.040 mass% is used, and in the case the temperature of the cooling water is <36°C, a steel slab having an Si content of <0.020 mass% is used.
