PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the reliability of operations in sensing whether an elevator car lies within the prescribed working range in a shaft and facilitate installation of the apparatus for sensing. SOLUTION: A light source 11 is mounted in the elevator car 2, and a camera 13 is installed at the top of the shaft 1 so that the light source 11 lies within the photographing range of the camera 13 when the car 2 is positioned at the top of or over the range predetermined. The image data obtained by photographing the light source 11 by the camera 13 is fed to an image processing part 31. The image processing part 31 analyzes the fed data and calculates the brightness of the brightest part of the image. In case the obtained value of brightness is equal to or above the reference value predetermined, the elevator control board 32 controls the drive of a winch so as to restrict the upward motion of the car 2.
