PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for classifying solid by which material to be treated is efficiently dispersed on a screen, an air stream can be made to pass through a layer of the dispersed material to be treated and the screen and a part of a raw material can be made to pass therethrough in keeping with the air stream and thereby the material to be treated can be efficiently classified and clogging of the screen can be prevented. SOLUTION: The raw material is supplied on the screen 3 of a sieve member 1, the sieve member 1 is vibrated by application of vibration thereto in a vertical direction in a state where the screen 3 is inclined in a definite direction by raising a peripheral part of the sieve member 1 by air pressure by driving a part of vibration device 6 by a driving device 35 and thereby the raw material is made to jump on the screen 3 and is dispersed. Then the air stream can be made to pass through the layer 10 of the dispersed material to be treated and the screen 3 and a part of the material to be treated is also made to pass therethrough. After a lapse of predetermined time, the vibration device 6 to be driven is switched and the sieve member 1 is vibrated in an inclined state in a different direction to classify the material to be classified.
