Preparation of polyvinylacetals comprises reaction of at least one polymer (A) containing 1-100 mol.% of structural units (a), 0-99 mol.% of structural units (b), 0-70 mol.% of structural units (c), with at least one carbonyl compound (B) in the presence of an acid catalyst, where a quotient X/Y results between 0.1-1, and X is temporal duration of the post-reaction phase (hot modification) in at least 50[deg]C and Y is temporal duration of the pre-reaction phase (cold modification) at maximum 30[deg]C. Preparation of polyvinylacetals comprises reaction of at least one polymer (A) containing 1-100 mol.% of structural units (a) of formula (-CH 2(OH)-CH 2(R 1>)-), 0-99 mol.% of structural units (b) of formula (-CH 2(O-CO-R 2>)-CH 2(R 1>)-), 0-70 mol.% of structural units (c) of formula (-C(R 5>)(R 6>)-C(R 3>)(R 4>)-), with at least one carbonyl compound (B) of formula (R 7>-CO-R 8>) in the presence of an acid catalyst, where a quotient X/Y results between 0.1-1, and X is temporal duration of the post-reaction phase (hot modification) in at least 50[deg]C and Y is temporal duration of the pre-reaction phase (cold modification) at maximum 30[deg]C. R 1>H or CH 3; R 2>H or 1-6C alkyl; R 3>-R 6>groups with a molecular weight of 1-500 g/mol; R 7>, R 8>H, COOH, COOM, 1-10C alkyl (optionally substituted) or 6-12C aryl (optionally substituted); and M : metal cation or optionally alkylated ammonium cation.
