METHOD OF MANUFACTURING ELLIPTICALLY POLARIZING PLATE, AND IMAGE DISPLAY APPARATUS USING ELLIPTICALLY POLARIZING PLATE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing an elliptically polarizing plate which has excellent characteristics also in an oblique direction, has a wide band and a wide view angle, and to provide an image display apparatus using the elliptically polarizing plate obtained by the manufacturing method.

SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the elliptically polarizing plate includes the steps of: subjecting a surface of a base material to optical alignment treatment; applying a liquid crystal material onto the surface of the base material subjected to the optical alignment treatment; aligning the liquid crystal material according to an alignment direction of the base material to form a first birefringent layer; transferring the first birefringent layer formed on the surface of the base material to a surface of a transparent protective film; layering a polarizer on the surface of the transparent protective film opposite from the first birefringent layer; and layering a polymer film on the surface of the first birefringent layer to form a second birefringent layer. When an angle formed by an absorption axis of the polarizer and a slow axis of the first birefringent layer is defined as α and an angle formed by the absorption axis of the polarizer and a slow axis of the second birefringent layer is defined as β, the angle α and the angle β have a relationship represented by expression (1): 2α+40°<β<2α+50°.
