PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic disk device of which the over-write property can be improved. SOLUTION: The perpendicular magnetic disk device is provided with: a magnetic disk including a soft magnetic under layer and a perpendicular magnetic recording layer; and a magnetic head having a recording element including a main magnetic pole, a return magnetic pole, and an exciting coil and a reproducing element including a magnetoresistive effect film, and a pair of shield films arranged so as to hold the magnetoresistive effect film. The perpendicular magnetic disk device is characterized in that magnetic read track width (MRW) by the magnetoresistive effect film is set narrower than magnetic write track width (MWW) of a signal recorded at the maximum frequency.
