A capnograph including a patient sample inlet, a reference sample inlet, a gas analysis chamber and a solenoid valve governing the supply of gas to the gas analysis chamber from the patient sample inlet and the reference sample inlet, the solenoid valve being operative in the absence of supply of electrical power thereto for defining a normally-open passageway between the patient sample inlet and the gas analysis chamber.
