Carbon dioxide sensors (20,22) are arranged upstream and downstream of a diesel particulate filter (18). A controller (24) monitors for and regulates regeneration of the filter based on the difference of carbon dioxide concentrations obtained from both sensors. The regeneration may also be controlled based on the mass of soot processed by the filter, such mass computed based on the difference of carbon dioxide concentration. An independent claim is also included for a method for monitoring regeneration of a diesel particulate filter.
