PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focusing camera using a plurality of focus detection areas (AF areas) enabling performing automatic focus detection, regardless of the focal distance of the photographic lens or the kind of auxiliary light-projecting device. SOLUTION: The automatic focusing camera has a focus detection means, comprising the plurality of focus detecting areas to perform focus detection, by using reflected light of a focus-detecting pattern by projecting the focus detecting pattern to a subject, when the luminance or the contrast of the subject is low, and performs focusing, based on the result of the focus detection. The automatic focusing camera is equipped with a control means which selects at least one focus detection area, to perform the focus detection out of the plurality of focus detection areas, based on information from a photographic lens mounted on the camera and information from the auxiliary light projecting device for projecting the focus-detecting pattern.
