PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium processing device and a medium processing method that can quickly handle errors in medium insertion and the like. SOLUTION: Feed rollers 12 for feeding a medium 10 in a spread state from a slot 11, and a CCD line sensor 13 for scanning the spread pages to read the size of the medium 10, a page mark printed on the spread pages and perforations as stitches and to detect printing lines are disposed near the slot 11. A CPU reads the spread page information about the medium 10 to identify the type of the medium 10. The medium processing device comprises the line sensor 13, a shutter 14 opened when a sensor detects the medium 10, a magnetic head part 15 for reading/writing data from/to a passbook magnetic stripe, an OCR part 16 for recognizing characters and the like on the medium 10, a printing part 17 for printing on the medium 10, and a page turning mechanism 18 for turning passbook pages.
