PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for erasing data from a magnetic tape storage medium, with which the data erasing time of a magnetic tape is shortened, and the already written data of the newest information or past information which has been written in the past but has not been erased can be erased completely. SOLUTION: This method for erasing data from a magnetic tape storage medium (92) contained in a cartridge (86) having a memory in which the already written last track position (yy) of the newest information which is written last and the last track position (xx) of the past information which has been written in the past but has not been erased are stored, includes; a step for reading the already written last track position of the newest information and the last track position of the past information from the memory (91); a step (S124) for deciding whether to erase data till either the read already written last track position of the newest information or the read last track position of the past information; and steps (S126, 128) for erasing data till the decided position.
