A uranium based alloy comprises: .Mo.0.25 -0.6% by weight .Al.0.04 -0.15% by weight .Fe.0.0325-0.05% by weight the balance being uranium and incidental impurities. The alloys may be made by vacuum melting of a magnesium reduced billet in a graphite crucible, the molybdenum and aluminium being added in the form of a 3% or 6% master alloy with uranium and iron in the form of strip, the melting being carried out by high frequency induction heating. The melt is held at 1500-1550 DEG C. for 5 minutes and cast under vacuum into an alumina sprayed graphite mould. The heat treatment disclosed comprises heating at 680-750 DEG C. followed by rapid transfer to a salt bath at 450-550 DEG C. where the casting is kept for 45 minutes. The use of the alloy in nuclear reactor fuel is disclosed. Specification 863,492 is referred to. |
