<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently perform preparatory operation in an image forming apparatus having a plurality of developing units in which one and the same color toner is stored, and an image forming method therefor. <P>SOLUTION: In the case where there are developing units belonging to Life Rank 1 representing a service life substantially as long as that of a fresh developing unit (step S101), and the developing units include one which is ready to print out of them (step S102), it is determined that image formation can be performed without performing the preparatory operation (step S106). In the case where there is no print-ready developing unit but a developing unit which requires an agitation operation of rotating a developing roller by a predetermined quantity (step S103), the agitation operation is performed on the developing unit (step S104) so as to make the developing unit in an image formation-ready state. In the case where the developing unit cannot be made print-ready by the agitation operation, a density control operation for adjusting operating conditions of an apparatus is performed (step S105).
