The method involves generating a command to control a function of an object (10) e.g. vehicle, during person/another object`s approach. An area in the object`s (10) proximity is divided into a zone (Z1) that is remote from the object (10) and a zone (Z2) nearer to the object (10). The zones are opto-electronically monitored whether the person/object proceeds in a preset direction from a position in the zone (Z1) to the zone (Z2). An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting an approach of a person or an object to another object e.g. motor vehicle, comprising an opto-electronic measuring device.
