<p>A bidirectional latching device for a portable computer cover 11 comprises a latch 3 which may be selectively positioned in either an upper position in which an upper latch 34 protrudes through an aperture 113 in an upper shell 111 of the cover, or a lower position in which a lower latch 35 protrudes through an aperture 114 in a lower shell 112 of the cover. The latch comprises at least one vertical guiding element 31, 32, 33 which corresponds to at least one vertical guiding device 21, 22, 23 mounted on the cover. A positioning block 5, comprising at least one horizontal guiding element 51, 52 which corresponds to at least one horizontal guiding device 41, 42 mounted on the cover, is biased towards the latch to engage either of upper and lower positioning units 36, 37 provided on the latch, such that the latch is selectively positioned in either the upper or lower position. The arrangement is such that the cover may be pivoted in the direction of arrow A (Fig. 1) to be latched to a host base 12 in a conventional manner, or may be rotated 180 degrees about axis B (Fig. 1) and then pivoted in the direction of arrow A and latched to the host base to form a tablet computer.</p> |
