A device for controlling stroke of a reciprocating compressor and a method thereof are provided to decrease cost, and to reduce power consumption by measuring positive or negative half wave and estimating the other symmetrical half wave in detecting motor voltage and current in controlling stroke. A stroke control device of a reciprocating compressor comprises a voltage detecting unit(100) measuring positive half wave voltage of a motor, a current detecting unit(200) measuring positive half wave current of a motor, a voltage and current estimating unit(300) estimating the rest negative half wave voltage and current symmetrically to positive half wave voltage and current, a stroke estimating unit(400) estimating stroke by using voltage and current from the voltage and current estimating unit, and a stroke control unit outputting a stroke control signal by comparing estimated stroke from the stroke estimating unit with the target stroke. The motor voltage and the motor current are calculated by measuring positive half wave and symmetrically estimating negative half wave, and the stroke is controlled according to the estimated motor voltage and current.
