A device for controlling operation of a reciprocating compressor and a method thereof are provided to increase efficiency of the reciprocating compressor, and to improve reliability by performing stroke control in decreasing capacity load and performing frequency control in increasing capacity load. An operation control device of a reciprocating compressor(200) includes a power unit(100) having an inverter(500) converting input power, the reciprocating compressor connected to the power unit, a sensor unit(300) measuring physical values applied to the reciprocating compressor, and a microprocessor(400) outputting an over load control signal for varying frequency of the power unit by comparing capacity load calculated according to the signal from the sensor unit with the reference load or a low load control signal for controlling stroke by varying voltage of the power unit. The microprocessor relatively increases frequency of the power unit by outputting the over load control signal in case of the reference load to be over the capacity load, and changes stroke by varying voltage with relatively lowering frequency of the power unit by outputting the low load control signal in case of the reference load to be less than the load capacity.
