Polymerization catalysts are prepared by treating solutions of Mn, Co, Co-Mn or Co-Mn-Pb salts of a -alkylalkanoic acids or of cycloaliphatic carboxylic acids (the carboxyl group being attached to a ring-carbon atom) with air or oxygen in the presence of light, and combining the product with an aromatic amine, optionally using as solvent a polymerizable mono-olefinic hydrocarbon such as styrene, or an ether such as isopropyl ether or tetrahydrofuran; a mixture of the latter with xylene may also be used. Suitable amines are aniline, ptoluidine, xylidine, monomethylaniline, monoethyl-aniline or -toluidine, dimethyl-aniline-xylidine or -p-toluidine, or diethylaniline. Specified parent acids of the said salts are trimethylacetic, a -methyl- and a : a -dimethyl-butyric, a : a -dimethylvaleric, hexahydrobenzoic and naphthenic acids and octoic (a -methylheptoic + a -ethylcaproic + a -n-propylvaleric) and nonoic (a -methylcaprylic + a -ethylheptoic + a -n-propylcaproic) acids. In examples a polyester solution derived from maleic and phthalic acids, ethylene glycol and diglycol, in styrene is hardened. Other unsaturated resins mentioned are those derived from (a) unsaturated polyesters from a : b -ethylene dicarboxylic acids (e.g. maleic, fumaric and itaconic acids) and (b) polymerizable ethylene derivatives such as styrene, nuclear substituted styrenes, divinyl benzene, acrylic or methacrylic acid esters or amides, esters of vinyl or alkyl alcohol and vinyl ketones.
