A vehicle occupant sensing system for detecting the condition of a vehicle seat includes a plurality of sensor assemblies that include a base member (44) and at least one upper slide member (46) supported for movement toward and away from the base member. A biasing member (48) for biasing the slide member away from the base is included and is retained with at least one retention member in the base or slide member which helps to reduce friction between the upper slide member and base member and thus sensor noise. A magnet (50) and Hall effect sensor (52) mounted in the assembly detect relative movement between the upper slide member and the base member. A contamination barrier arrangement (54) is included to prevent dust or moisture from entering the sensor assembly to improve sensor lifetime.
