METHOD FOR DETECTING THE FREE FALL OF DISK DRIVES AND APPARATUS THEREOF

A free fall detection method of a disc drive and an apparatus therefor are provided to prevent a detection error by an external force temporarily generated in the drive when the drive freely falls by accurately detecting whether the drive freely falls by using the first threshold value for detecting a free fall start time and the second threshold value for detecting whether the free fall of the drive is continued. An acceleration measuring unit(400) measures the instantaneous acceleration of a disc drive. If the instantaneous acceleration measured in the acceleration measuring unit(400) is greater than the first threshold value, a free fall start detecting unit(410) outputs a free fall monitoring signal. If the free fall monitoring signal is received from the free fall start detecting unit(410) and the acceleration measured in the acceleration measuring unit(400) is continuously maintained as the second threshold value or more during a certain time, a free fall progress detecting unit(420) judges that the disc drive freely falls.
