A method for displaying a screen in a portable terminal is provided to rotate only display data within a rotation-available area of a display unit so as to correspond to a rotational direction of a folder of the portable terminal and to display the rotated display data, thereby reducing a unit cost of the portable terminal by reducing workload of software and reducing memory usage. When a folder of a portable terminal is rotated, it is determined whether there is a rotation-available area on a display unit of the folder(201~203). If so, only display data within the rotation-available area is rotated so as to correspond to a rotational direction of the folder of the portable terminal, and the rotated display data is displayed(204). Screen sizes of the rotation-available area, before/after the folder of the portable terminal is rotated, are equal. The display unit comprises the rotation-available area and a rotation-unavailable area.
