<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a TN liquid crystal display device which is improved in view angle characteristic, especially, view angle contrast. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device comprises a liquid crystal cell of TN (twisted nematic) alignment mode and a couple of polarizing plates which are arranged on both sides of the liquid crystal cell, and an optical compensating sheet which has at least three layers (1), (2), and (3) is arranged between a polarizing film of at lest one of the couple of polarizing plates and the liquid crystal cell. The three layers are (1) a transparent film satisfying expressions (I) and (II), (2) an optical anisotropic layer 1 containing a liquid crystal compound formed by coating, and (3) an optical anisotropic layer 2 which has an Nz value of 0 to 2.0 represented by expression (III). Here, the expression (I) is 0≤Re<SB>(630)</SB>≤10, and ¾Rth<SB>(630)</SB>¾≤25; the expression (II) are ¾Re<SB>(400)</SB>-Re<SB>(700)</SB>¾≤10, and ¾Rth<SB>(400)</SB>-Rth<SB>(700)</SB>¾≤35, and the expression (III) is Nz=0.5+Rh/Re, where Re<SB>(λ)</SB>is a front retardation value (unit: nm) at a wavelength λ nm and Rth<SB>(λ)</SB>is a retardation value (unit: nm) at the wavelength λ nm in a film thickness direction. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
