PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a procedure for the stable dispersion of a fluorescent substance having comparatively low thermal and chemical durabilities such as an organic fluorescent pigment and semiconductor fine particles in a glass matrix, without the decline of fluorescent function. SOLUTION: A procedure for the production of a fluorescent glass material is carried out by compressing a mixture of at least one fluorescent substance selected from the organic fluorescent pigment and fluorescent semiconductor fine particles and glass fine particles with maximum diameter of 100 nm or less under pressure of 1 GPa or over, and by further heat-treating of the resultant fluorescent glass material at a temperature of 50°C or over.
