PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a travel control device for a vehicle, and its control method suppressing a wave of speed fluctuation of a following vehicle when vehicles having cruise control functions and carrying out automatic inter-vehicle distance control are traveling in tandem. SOLUTION: The travel control device includes a first measuring means 1 for measuring an inter-vehicle distance D to a preceding vehicle CO, a second measuring means 2 for measuring a travel speed of an own vehicle Cn, and a control means 10. The control means 10 is composed so as to determine a travel speed Vc of the own vehicle to be controlled on the basis of the inter-vehicle distance D measured by the first measuring means 1, and a relative speed Vr determined as a temporal variation of the inter-vehicle distance D, and to carry out control of traveling at a predetermined upper limit speed V1 when the travel speed Vc of the own vehicle to be controlled exceeds the upper limit speed V1.
