The invention relates to device for determining the position of a navigable object (12) that is present within a magnetic background field (H_ex) of a predetermined frequency-dependent amplitude of its magnetic induction, said field being generated by coils (13i, 23j) of a background field coil system (3). At least a part of one of the coils (13i, 23j) of the background field coil system (3) is simultaneously used as the transmitting coil for generating a magnetic position measuring field (H_p) having a predetermined frequency at the location of the object (12), the amplitude of the position measuring field (H_p) at the location of the object (12) being greater than that of the background field (H_ex) at the predetermined frequency. The inventive device also comprises a receiver (21) for receiving position signals (S1) generated by the object (12) depending on the position measuring field (H_p) and means for processing and evaluating the position signals (S1).
