The method involves storing a portion of kinetic energy as potential energy during a braking process by a hydraulic pump (16), which presses a spring in a pressure cylinder. The pump contacts a motor vehicle drive shaft (1) via a step-less automatic gearbox and an electromagnetic clutch. The stored energy is released as the spring relaxes such that a hydraulic motor drives the shaft to drive the vehicle when the vehicle stops. An independent claim is also included for a starting and braking assistance for an engine e.g. internal combustion engine, electric motor, of a motor vehicle.
