Polymers and copolymers of butadiene, containing at least 50% of the butadiene units in the 1,4-configuration, are hydrochlorinated in a rubber solvent solution with dry gaseous hydrogen chloride under a pressure of 1 to 35 atmospheres, in the presence of 0 to 100% of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, based on the weight of the polymer, the pressure being at least 2 atmospheres when no catalyst is present. Specified monomers which may be copolymerized with the butadiene are styrene and acrylonitrile. Rubber solvents specified are benzene, alkyl aromatic compounds, chlorobenzene, carbon tetrachloride or dichloroethylene. Catalysts specified are SnCl4, TiCl4, FeCl3, AlCl3 o SbCl5. To isolate the reaction product the solution may first be neutralized, for example with ammonia, caustic alkalis, alkaline earth oxides or neutral or acid carbonates of the alkali or alkaline earth metals, and the resulting precipitate filtered off. The product is then obtained by precipitation with for example methanol or ethanol, by steam distillation, by distilling off the solvent in a stream of gas, or by distilling off the solvent at normal or reduced pressure. These products may contain up to 32% by weight of chlorine. They may serve for the production of adhesives and are suitable as raw materials for sheets and coating agents. |
