PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the light emitted from an object to be analyzed, with high sensitivity. SOLUTION: An optical pickup 62 irradiates an electrophoresis path 8 with an intensity-modulated light beam i, having a first irradiation light intensity and a second irradiation light intensity higher than the first irradiation light intensity. A light, emitted from the electrophoresis path 8, passes through a band-pass filter 73 and is outputted as a filter output light, including first and second filter output lights. A light quantity detecting circuit 65 subtracts a first light signal, indicating the intensity of the first filter output light from a second filter light signal for indicating the intensity of the second filter output light. Since the background light component that could not be previously removed by the band-pass filter 73 can be removed wholly, the light emitted from the analyzed object can be detected with high sensitivity.
