PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cationic thickener which has thixotropy and excels in coating properties and a feeling of use as a thickener for cosmetics and toiletries. SOLUTION: The cationic thickener is obtained by the radical polymerization of (A) at least one cation modified polysaccharide, (B) at least one nonionic vinyl monomer represented by formula (1) (wherein R<SB>1</SB>is hydrogen or a methyl group; and R<SB>2</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>are the same or different and each is hydrogen, a 1-4C linear or branched alkyl group, an alkenyl group, an alkoxyalkyl group or a hydroxyalkyl group), and (C) at least one crosslinkable vinyl monomer as the essential constituting components.
