<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a background in an input image and a position where a gray value is large from being erroneously detected as a trolley wire. <P>SOLUTION: In the trolley wire detection device 40, an image projected with the trolley wire 20 is obtained by a camera 10, an edge of the trolley wire is extracted by multiplying/adding a trolley detection operation element to the obtained image, a coordinate of the extracted edge is voted to Hough space by Hough transformation and image processing for detecting the trolley wire is performed by detecting an apex of the voted Hough space. It is determined whether or not difference of the gray value g(h, j), g(k, j) of the image corresponding to both left and right end coordinates (h, j), (k, j) of the trolley wire detection operation element is a constant value or higher prior to multiplication/addition of the trolley wire detection operation element. When it is a constant value or lower, it is determined as the trolley wire and multiplication/addition calculation is performed. However, when it is a constant value or higher, it is determined as an article other than the trolley wire and multiplication/addition calculation is not performed.
