PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that the structure of providing carriage guides before and after a head and supporting the guides on right and left side plates easily causes a twist in the two guides and makes it difficult to obtain parallelism and the presence of a guide on the front side of the head hinders the setting of a roll paper and damages a setting property when a user uses the roll paper. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has rail stays supported on the right and left side plates forming a mainframe, a main rail and a sub rail supported on the rail stays. A carriage engages with the main rail in a shaft. A pressurization mechanism to pressurize the main rail in a horizontal direction is provided to eliminate play with the shaft, and a pinching mechanism which pinches the underside of the sub rail from above and below to ensure that a rotary member fixed to the carriage rotatably is abutted against and pinches the top side from above and below to ensure that a rotary member swingably fixed to the carriage and rotatable butts against.
